Rajapaksas’ wealth tops US$ 18 Billion

08/May/2015

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that going by the current estimates, it has been revealed that the wealth of Rajapaksa family may exceed US$ 18 billion, i.e the amount is equal to one fourth of the country’s GDP.

He charged that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa may be one of the “most corrupt” politicians in the world.

Minister Samaraweera was addressing the media at the UNP Headquarters “Sirikotha” yesterday.

Asked what the government’s next move would be in recovering this colossal amount of wealth, he said that investigations are in progress.

Pointing out some examples in the global context, the minister said the anti-corruption process would take time.

“The process may take a certain duration for the conduct of a full scale investigation on the issues and to identify where the wealth is hidden,” he said.

He added that the government would seek technical assistance from countries, where hidden wealth is stashed
