Sri Lankan Police Torture
Defence attorney for the five suspects who were charged in an alleged case of theft around November 2011, Visuvalingam Manivannan told TamilNet that one of the first three suspects in the above case had said in his testimony when the case was taken for hearing in Mallaakam courts this week, that the 5th accused, Sumanan Sriskandarajah, was hung upside down, tortured and killed in front of him at the Chunnakam police station. The 4th suspect told the Court during his testimony that he was tortured and severely beaten by the Chunnakam police, but he didn't personally witness any torture administered to the 5th suspect, the attorney further added. Manivannan said that the testimony and eye-witness evidence being presented in the case appears to confirm that the 4th and 5th witnesses were abducted during Tamil Heroes Rememberence week on the 21st November 2011 and were deliberately and falsely charged by the Chunnaakam police as the last two suspects in the 'unrelated' theft case.
The 5th suspect. Sumanan Sriskandarajah's body was discovered in the Ira'nai-madu tank, and then the Police had claimed that Sumanan had drowned while he was escaping from police custody.
Attorney Mannivannan said that the case was taken up in Mallaakam Magistrates’ Courts only after he brought attention to the deliberate procedural delays by the Police which had prevented the case being heard for nearly five years.
Manivannan said that he had pleaded with the Judge to provide protection to the witnesses to the case, and to arrest the suspect officers who were complicit in the murder of Sumanan, the 5th suspect.
The Judge had ordered for a complete report to be produced by the Police. The Judge also ordered that any possible danger to the lives of witnesses should be brought to his attention promptly, and that if Police were to take any witness statements, these should be taken within the Court premises.
Manivannan said that while the Judge did not order the arrests of the Police officers who are suspected of killing Sumanan, he is looking forward to reading the full report of the incident ordered by the Judge.
